So we all love comics right? Well, sometimes comics get made into films and lately those have been pretty awesome as well. It has definitely been a learning process the past two decades. Hollywood is realizing what makes a good comic book movie and what turns off both the hardcore fans and the regular movie-going crowd. This year is going to be INTENSE with great movie releases:

THE CRAZIES - Okay, this first one is a bit of a cheat. It is not based on a comic, but they put out a comic last week that ties into the movie. It looks pretty scary and very intense. The comic even has some awesome creators working on it (Marc Andreyko, Ivan Brandon and more). The movie is out now, so go check it out.

KICK-ASS - Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's baby. This 'real-life' superhero story is sure to piss off a bunch of people while making others cheer for more. It'll be raw, it'll be bloody, it'll be kick-ass. The hardcover is out right now and the movie comes out April 16th!

THE LOSERS - If you haven't read this comic, you are seriously missing out. It's going to be a great espionage film like no other. From the trailer it seems pretty faithful to the comic too. There is an awesome collected edition that contains volumes one and two in a nice package. The movie comes out April 23rd!

IRON MAN 2 - Do I even need to add anything about this? This is your summer blockbuster right here. Marvel will be pumping the shelves with an intense amount of Iron Man merchandise and comics and graphic novels the next few months. I highly suggest the storylines "Armor Wars", "Extremis", "World's Most Wanted" and this Wednesday, Marvel is collecting issues #1-19 of Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man in a nice hardcover for a cheap price. The movie comes out May 7th!

SEX AND THE CITY 2 - The girls are back! I'm just seeing if you guys are paying attention. Hey, we had Cynthia Nixon buy stuff from us before, the least we could do is pimp out her film!

Aaaand that brings us to June so I'll stop here. There are still a bunch of other amazing films coming out during this time and after (Scott Pilgrim! Jonah Hex!). It is a good time to be a geek.

SPARTA USA #1 Of(6)
DC COMICS Written by DAVID LAPHAM
Art and cover by JOHNNY TIMMONS
1:10 Variant cover by David Lapham
There's never been a more American town than Sparta. In Sparta they believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness through treachery, blackmail and murder - just like the Maestro taught them as he learned it from the U.S. President. Sparta is such a great place that no one ever thinks of leaving. It's been three years since anyone's tried, and he was never heard from again...until today.
Today, Godfrey McLaine, the greatest quarterback in Sparta's history, has returned bigger, taller and redder than when he left. He's also armed with a secret that will expose the rotten core of the American Dream. Award-winning writer David Lapham (YOUNG LIARS, STRAY BULLETS) and artist Johnny Timmons (Wolverine) deliver a unique take on what it means to be an American!

StrangeTalesHC
Strange Tales is an interesting beast. Basically, Marvel Comics grabbed some of the most well respected and talented artists in the industry. Strangely enough, most of them have never done work for Marvel or DC before. Many of these great writers and artists are considered "independents". They self-publish their own books without much concern about trying to reach the "Big Two".

So what happened when you took all of these artists and gave them Marvel's all star cast? You get one of the most amazing, beautiful, and interesting comics that I have seen since I started reading comics as a child. A lot of the comics are humorous and poke fun at our favorite super powered heroes. Jeffrey Brown's Fantastic Four short story had me laughing out loud and Jhonen Vasquez's Modok tale is something EVERYONE needs to read, but we also had compelling and action packed stories such as Matt Kindt's Black Widow tale. There is so much to this book plus it has mini biographies of each creator and highlights a lot of their creator owned work. This is a necessary for any art fan and every comic fan.

WALKING DEAD #70
Written by Robert Kirkman
Penciled by Charlie Adlard

walkingdead70
Ok ok, enough with HITMONKEY already right? well for now!

For now I want to take a look at WALKING DEAD #70 written as always by the series creator Robert Kirkman and art by Charlie Adlard. SO maybe you're thinking, another Zombie book right? WRONG! The thing about Walking Dead is I have almost forgotten there are zombies even in it. Where most of the genre focuses on the cheesy banter between undead chow time on human flesh, this book focuses on the drama between the relationships of the remaining survivors on Earth. Think of the zombies as sort of a background song you know is there but it only affects you subconsciously.

It seems Kirkman saves his best writing for this book, as well he should. Invincible always seems rushed and late and Image United , well, I wont even go there. This is the book Kirkman was meant for and a story I have been unable to put down since the beginning. Every time you think ok, well this is where it has to end you cant go anywhere else with this can you?

Issue #70 proves to me that just when you think you know something, Kirkman pulls the rug out from under you and the fall is ever so sweet. Rick Grimes, the reluctant protagonist leader of our rag band group of survivors might have found providence and a new beginning in a small protected community where the children are smiling and the people live in real homes with real clothes that don't stink of week old zombie brains. But dont get too comfortable, enter Douglas Monroe, a politician, a mediator? Id say yet another creepy, power hungry leader with dark secrets and intentions.

Rick agrees to being the town constable, a job not unfamiliar to him and maybe this Garden of Eden is only a reprieve, a set-up if you will for what comes next and if Kirkman stays true to form we wont have long to wait for when the S*%@ hits the fan, but for now I'll enjoy the break and savor the calm before the storm.
